Dear readers,
Welcome to the third online edition of the quarterly NAFA Network – the Nordic Anthropological Film Association's newsletter.
In this issue, we’d like to share with you updates from NAFA ‒ both the visual souvenir from the Annual Meeting held in a hybrid format in October, a review of the NAFA 40th International Film Festival by our very own as well as the Call for Films for the 2022 edition.
We are excited to draw your attention to the first contribution to our freshly established blog category “VA MAP Feautures”, by Martin Gruber. “VA MAP Features” is a place reserved for crisp individual profiles of VA teaching programmes, festivals, collectives—you name it—that can be found on our VA Map. Martin so kindly agreed to write a couple of lines about the Media and Visual Anthropology programme at Bremen University, where he teaches.
We’d also like to remind you of the upcoming deadline for international applications for the UiT Master of Visual Anthropology as well as of the release of the open-access book “Visual Methodology in Migration Studies: New Possibilities, Theoretical Implications, and Ethical Questions” (edited by Karolina Nikielska-Sekula and Amandine Desille), which builds on varied empirical case studies and methodological examples to show how contemporary migration scholars consider the ethical and theoretical implications of visual work.
And last but not least, we would like to highlight several calls for films from a range of exciting anthropological film festivals. Their high number and quality can only make us optimistic for the future of anthropological film exhibitions in these new, uncertain times.
Finally, we would like to repeat our mantra from last time: we are nothing without you and your valuable input. We hope that you will join and actively shape this new platform together with us in the future:
- Can't find your teaching programme or collective on the VA Map? Submit your suggestion here.
- Did you notice that specific film festivals did not make it into the Calendar yet? Use this link to provide us with the correct info.
- Are you thinking about writing a review piece for our Blog? We are happy to receive contributions here.
Please observe that the deadline for blog contributions (between 800-2000 words) for the next volume is 12 December 2021.
Happy reading, and keep safe!
Your editorial team,
Anne Sofie, Armina, Anne, Christos and Christian
