Dear Readers,
Welcome to NAFA Network’s first edition of 2022 – a year that has been marked by trauma and unrest on the European continent. We, as humans, stand with all persecuted people in the Ukraine, and condemn any form of imperialistic violence, a reality that has been the norm for many communities beyond the European border for years, decades, or even centuries. As always, we come to you with news from the world of visual anthropology because we believe that the prioritisation of vulnerable and other'd voices is even more important in times of conflict.
To provide an updated context of the kind of work the Nordic Anthropological Film Association has been engaged in for around half a century, Orsolya Veraart and Peter I. Crawford have written a short reminder about NAFA's work.
We would also like to draw your attention to a few upcoming deadlines relevant for visual anthropologists:
- 7 April: Call for applications for the Visual Research Network Conference + Residency 2022;
- 22 April: Call for films for NAFA Film Festival 2022;
- 30 April: Applications for F4F (Filmmaking for Fieldwork) Summer School 2022;
- 2 May: Call for papers for the International Visual Sociology Association Annual Conference 2022
In addition to the above, there are an open-ended call for submissions for the next issue of JAF (Journal of Anthropological Films), and an open application process for MA in Visual Anthropology, Media and Documentary Practices (University of Münster).
Finally, we also want to repeat our mantra from last time: we are nothing without you and your valuable input. We hope that you will join and actively shape this new platform together with us in the future:
- Can’t find your teaching programme or collective on the VA Map? Submit your suggestion here.
- Did you notice that specific film festivals did not make it into the Calendar yet? Use this link to provide us with the correct info.
- Are you thinking about writing a review piece for our Blog? We are happy to receive contributions here.
Please observe that the deadline for blog contributions (between 800-2000 words) for the next volume is 17 June 2022.
Happy reading, and keep safe!
Your editorial team,
Anne Sofie, Armina, Anne, Christos and Christian
