Goldsmiths’ MA Visual Anthropology degree show

On 17-18 April Goldsmiths MA Visual Anthropology graduates will be showcasing their work online.

The Goldsmiths MA Visual Anthropology students present Insideout, a virtual showcase of their 2020 dissertation films. Insideout will take place over two days, with screenings and Q&As with filmmakers, spread across five thematic strands.

The theme for this year’s group showing, Insideout, reflects and engages with the methodologies and subjects that the student filmmakers employed during the past year. It refers to the manner in which we reconfigured, reimagined, and reinvented our initial ideas to adapt to a pandemic present. As a result, these films represent an intimate interplay between our interior worlds and embedded environments and a productive engagement with obstruction and limitation.
As borders closed and we lost access to filming locations and collaborators, our sites of anthropological inquiry widened and absorbed new avenues for engaging with the visual and considering the personal as an embodied site of knowledge production.

The 2020 visual anthropology cohort—which consists of a broad range of creatives from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds—tapped into the changing circumstances and expanded the frameworks of filmmaking in unprecedented ways, creating experimental, sensorial artefacts that push the boundaries of the subjective.
