CFF: German International Ethnographic Film Festival (early bird deadline: 25 November)

The German International Ethnographic Film Festival (GIEFF) is celebrating its 17th edition from May 8th- 12th 2024 in Göttingen. We are pleased to announce the new call for films open until December 15th 2023!

EARLY BIRD SUBMISSIONS until November 25th 2023. Apply here

GIEFF is pursuing four objectives:

  1. to capture current trends and topics in ethnographic/documentary filmmaking by showing films, videos and interactive media not older than three years;
  2. to highlight the contribution of ethnographic film as a method of producing and representing knowledge in Social & Cultural Anthropology by arranging workshops, panels and roundtables with filmmakers and visual anthropologists;
  3. to offer a venue for meeting and knowledge sharing between aspiring young filmmakers and experienced professionals as well as academics from different countries, institutions and cinematic traditions;
  4. to organize a student film competition, honoring the best productions with Student Film Prizes, awarded by an international jury.

Filmmakers from Social and Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, Folklore Studies and neighboring disciplines as well as documentary filmmakers especially from the global south are welcome. An international selection committee consisting of both academics and filmmakers reviews the submitted films with respect to their cinematic quality and potential to stimulate debates among the audience.

We are looking forward to receive quite diverse submissions and to welcome guests and visitors from around the globe.
