German International Ethnographic Film Festival
May 8 - May 12
The festival presents the most recent productions of ethnographic films and acts as a platform for a dialogue between anthropology and documentary filmmaking.
The festival is a unique forum for filmmakers and film enthusiasts from all over the world and considers itself as an innovative interface between science and culture. The aim is to make films about current socio-cultural topics accessible to the interested public and a broad specialist audience, thus stimulating a socially relevant dialogue.
The festival is also a meeting point of young students of anthropology, sociology and media studies, who are interested in the use of film as research method, mode of publishing and communicating research results. The student film competition is one of the central events of the festival.
The main themes of this year’s festival are:
- Living on the margins of society
- Coping with personal destiny
- Beyond the matter
- Gender issues
- Struggling with the environmental crisis
- Dealing with political obstacles
- Decolonisation
- Dealing with memories in film
- The use of re-enactment in film and working with virtual reality.
63 presentations were selected, 20 in the student film section, 28 in the main festival, and 15 in the online section.
The filmmakers are from 30 different nationalities and represent people in 44 countries.
Most films will be screened at the Paulinerkirche in Göttingen, except 15 quite impressive long films which will be only available online like many of the screened films.
