In recent years and also in migration studies, filming is being used as an important tool for research and to let the voice of people reach a larger audience. This event will discuss various whys and hows of the filming process and the challenges on this path. Important issues such as ethics and distribution of the work on various platforms will also be covered. This conversation will be helpful for anyone who intends to use ethnographic filming techniques for research or other filming projects.
Join us in this conversation with Andy Lawrence, a senior lecturer at the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester in the UK, where he is also filmmaker-in-residence. He is a founding member of the Filmmaking for Fieldwork (F4F) collective where he convenes and teaches the annual F4F™ Summer School. His films about childbirth, death, adolescence, old age, adventure and identity in the UK, India and Peru look at the uncertainty that surrounds momentous and life changing experiences. Currently, Andy is producing Jón Bjarki Magnússon’s film Half Elf and co-editing a new book entitled, Empirical Art: Filmmaking for Fieldwork in practice (expected 2024). This follows his recent publication of Filmmaking for fieldwork: a practical handbook (2020) from Manchester University Press.
